Toast
an excerpt from my book “Blessed by Breakfast.”
My first solo book was, of course, a cookbook of sorts. It was my own labor of love. First, I compiled the “recipes” and took all the photos. Then, I planned the layout, the overlays, the font, and the best-feeling paper imaginable.
“Recipes”
I have recipes in quotes because although there are a few recipes in the book, not everything needs a recipe. For example, my beloved toast. So simple, crunchy, buttery, and topped with fresh fruit from my garden. Or I top it with local jams and jellies. I might lightly sprinkle it with a homemade cinnamon sugar blend. I experiment with different cinnamon; Saigon, Ceylon, Royal, or Korintje, each with its own complexity. Or switch up the sugar to organic cane, muscovado, and turbine, again all adding their personality.
The smell of toasted bread calms my nervous system. One child at home wakes up early and often has toast. The scent is divine, especially when someone else makes it.
