How many scarves do I really need?

This is the question I asked myself as I was packing for a camping trip (out of my van). A simple 4-day camping trip. As I stood in the laundry room looking at two rather large bins of scarves . . . a small voice inside my head said, “remember when you had nothing? remember how that one scarf meant everything to you?”

I went upstairs, found the purple and green floral scarf — in my favorite shades, of my favorite flower, and sat looking at it for a long time. I mean, what else do you do in the middle of a pandemic? You ponder your relationship with a piece of fabric!

It was the only scarf I had for many years — some really lean years in all fairness to the scarf. Years where I felt lucky to sleep on someone's couch for the night. It kept me warm, made me feel safe, dried my tears. I held the scarf to my cheek with gratitude and put it back in the drawer.

Back downstairs to pack . . . I then decided to take two scarves on this trip — one that was lightweight and could double as a shawl and my beloved Burberry — purchased by my husband while on a New York business trip — not a budget approved purchase. That was almost 20 years ago now, and it…
