Mom, why don’t you make banana bread anymore?

I stopped to think about the question as I glanced at the two bunches of bananas in the bowl on a counter that hadn’t been clutter-free in months. I couldn’t remember why I stopped making banana bread and muffins. I couldn’t remember when my house stopped being immaculate. After my brain slowed down, I questioned, “would you eat banana bread.” The answer was a resounding “yes, of course!”

I began my research by looking at all the remaining cookbooks — I purged my cookbook collection a few years ago — honestly, I don’t even look at the ones I kept. Until one of my kids asks me why I don’t make . . .

If you have kids, you know that one day they are “on” a food and the next day, usually, after you have made a few batches for them to devour and a few extra for the freezer . . . they are suddenly “off” that favorite food. It makes me crazy. I have two huge bunches of bananas on my counter because my teenagers and young adults STILL do this! Now they are “off” bananas but “on” banana bread.
